General Practitioner (GP)
For medical care in the Netherlands, you normally contact your own General Practitioner (GP, in Dutch: huisarts) during regular opening hours. If your GP is closed and you have an urgent medical problem that cannot wait, you can contact the Huisartsenpost (out-of-hours GP service). Your GP is your first point of contact for most non-emergency physical and mental health concerns.
A GP can:
Diagnose and treat common health problems;
Prescribe or renew medication;
Arrange tests when needed;
Refer you to a hospital or medical specialist.
In most cases, you need a referral from your GP before seeing a specialist.
Dutch GPs usually prescribe medication, arrange tests or make referrals when they consider this medically necessary. For minor complaints, you may first be advised to rest, take paracetamol (acetaminophen) and contact your GP again if your symptoms do not improve.
The Huisartsenpost is available during evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays for urgent medical problems that cannot wait until your GP reopens.
