Your stay

Check-in information

After payment, you will receive the tenancy agreement and be asked to upload your personal details, passport and proof of enrolment. Your property manager will contact you about the rental contract, key pickup and next steps. They will also be your main contact during your stay.

Housing permit

Some properties, including certain studios in The Hague, require a housing permit. If applicable, you must arrange it before moving in.

How do I report a repair or maintenance issue?

Please report maintenance issues directly to your property manager. If they use a dedicated service platform, submit your request there using the instructions provided.

What are municipality taxes?

Residents in the Netherlands may receive bills for local taxes, such as:

Waste tax for household waste collection

Water system tax for water management

Pollution tax for wastewater treatment

These taxes are separate from your rent and are charged by the municipality or regional water authority. RoomPlaza and the property manager do not collect or manage them.

The bill may be addressed to one tenant, but it can relate to the entire household. Tenants usually divide the costs among themselves.

Amounts and rules vary by location and year. If you move out and deregister, the authority may adjust the bill or refund part of the amount. You may also be eligible for remission depending on your financial situation.

Always follow the instructions in the letter and contact the issuing authority directly with any questions.

What are the extra monthly costs, such as gas and electricity?

If utilities are not included in the rent, the tenants must arrange an energy contract for the entire apartment. Check the listing or Article 6 of your rental agreement.

The first tenant records the meter readings during check-in, and one tenant usually places the contract in their name. The costs are then shared among all tenants.

Monthly costs depend on usage, energy prices, the apartment and the number of tenants, so RoomPlaza cannot provide a fixed estimate. At check-out, the final meter readings determine whether you receive a refund or need to pay an additional amount.

What is the condition of the apartments?

Apartments advertised on RoomPlaza are generally previously occupied and therefore not in brand-new condition. Minor signs of normal use may be present.

Where to find your electricity, gas and water meter in your apartment

The gas and electricity meter are most likely installed in your fuse box.

The water meter is most likely situated under a hatch beneath your carpet at the front door.
